12th Java Overseas Varsity English Debate Competition

JOVED – “Java Overseas Varsity English Debate Competition” - 2nd most prestigious English Debate in Indonesia. This year 2008, JOVED was held by Parahyangan University participated by 48 teams from many different city in Indonesia such as Malang, Solo, Bandung, Jakarta, Semarang. Surabaya and Yogjakarta. The Debate itself used “Asian Parliamentary” which is a standard for asian debating competition. A team consist of 4 person, 3 person as debaters and 1 person as a adjudicator. Debater jobs of course to debate and adjudicator jobs to proctor, evaluate each debate session conducted by debaters.

Well, actually this was our 1st time our team from ITHB joined a debate competition and this was also the first time for our team members to debate. Debate itself was a very challenging activity since it pushed you to think as fast as possible, but not only fast, you also had to deliver what you said in comprehensive (Matter), courteously (Manner) and structured (Method). The 3 concept of Manner, Matter, Method are the measurement on how good your team or a debater in debating an issue/motion according to the adjudicators.

Since we don’t have sufficient time which is only 2 weeks to practice and learn more to increase our debate technique. We finally failed to break into final round because our point was not high enough to compete with the other 48 teams. We won 3 times and lost 3 times an ranked us on 31st , pretty good start for a novice team hehe….  We proud of it because we have achieved something that wasn’t so bad, the more important thing is we proved ourself we could learn fast, and hard work to achieve something . You know, for being the first always uneasy but if there is no 1st time then there’s would be no 2nd or 3rd time.

Thank you, all debaters from UNPAR B, ITB A, UNISBA and IM Telkom for helping us improving our debate skill during spare with you guys. All adjudicator, Ms. Miranda from UI who is one of the best adjudicator in this event based on our team opinion of course :P

See you guys on the next year in 13rd JOVED competition…

Financial Market Forecasting (modified Support Vector Regression)

Gosh…gosh…what a rush! Within 2 days, I have to finish my thesis, god help me…My thesis is about financial market forecasting using modified Support Vector Regression (SVR). although I realized that experts have still been searching the best method to predict a stock market accurately and none of them had completely success in forecasting those index and market until now. But, I believe that what I am doing here is more than enough to be an added value for the search. Since, I had improved Support Vector Regression result by implementing exponential smoothing error control to the prediction. it helped maintain error level for long-term forecasting and it is proved it could provide a better long-term prediction result. So, if there’s anyone, who just curious or interesting in my thesis or willing to do some more extensive research based on it, please let me know.

Here, a brief and simple explation of my long-term prediction method using modified SVR :

  1. Generate OPEN T+1, HIGH T+1, LOW T+1 and CLOSE T+1 models based on Training data
  2. Prediction Opening price using OPEN T+1 model and input data (T)
  3. Use predicted result (Step 2) with High (T), Low (T), Close data (T) as input datas and predict HIGH and LOW using HIGH T+1 and LOW T+1 model
  4. Predict next day CLOSE index using input form Step 2 and 3 using CLOSE T+1 model
For each prediction result, if error gaps between real value and predicted value is greater than average error level for data, replace the prediction result using exponential smoothing. That’s all.
Until now, I have still been looking another method to increase prediction accuracy and decrease MSE (Mean Squared Error) and SCC (Squared Correlating Coefficient). So, this project may still open for major change or improvement. Cheers…

PS: Any suggestion from other expert or any interested parties in financial forecasting would be very appreciated.

Oracle 10g: Administration I Workshop

Hi guys…I have stopped writing almost a month, quite long. Right now, I’m kinda busy with my thesis, have anyone out there ever done a thesis about long term financial market prediction using SVR ? Please, I need you suggestion hehe.. : )

Okay, let’s back to the business, my post now is related with a certification that I just took which is Certification for Oracle 10g: Administration I. One thing, I have to admit, to get this certification you had to work twice time harder than SAP certification’s test, not by mean to underestimate SAP Certification but this OCA certification is more about technical-matter. Let’s hope, it would become a worthwhile qualification to have as well as my SAP certifications.

For a summary, after you have finished the course you will be able to administer an Oracle database, manage Oracle database and performing a backup or recovery while meeting an error or media failure.

Detail of courses (18 sections in 40 hours of training hour) :

  1. Introduction
  2. Installing the Oracle Database Software
  3. Creating an Oracle Database
  4. Managing the Oracle Instance
  5. Managing Database Storage Structure
  6. Administering User Security
  7. Managing Schema Objects
  8. Managing Data and Concurrency
  9. Managing Undo Data
  10. Implementing Oracle Database Security
  11. Configuring the Oracle Network Environment
  12. Proactive Maintenance
  13. Performance Management
  14. Backup and Recovery Concepts
  15. Performing Database Backups
  16. Performing Database Recovery
  17. Performing Flashback
  18. Moving Data (Export / Import)
All the certification module was imported from singapore, so the certification has a truly international standardization. If you have any question regarding Oracle or this Certification, feel free ask to me and I’m more than happy to help you. See ya
